Violet Winters once had it all but lost it when her husband was murdered by a criminal madman. During a cold winter night Violet has to leave her warm bed to tell her neighbor to turn the music down. And that’s when she meets sinister, scarred, scarily attractive security specialist, Joe Callahan.
She wants to deny it, but Violet can’t beat back the hunger she feels for Joe so she gives in again and again. Feeling it himself, Joe feeds Vi’s hunger, breaking his own rules to keep her in his bed.
Even though Violet had only one man in her life, she’s sure Joe is giving her the signals and Vi decides she’s ready to take a second chance at life and, maybe, love. But Violet doesn’t know the dark secrets in Joe’s past, secrets so soul-wrenching, they’ve drained him dry. With nothing left to give, Joe’s determined to live his life alone and he breaks Violet’s heart.
Crushed by Joe’s betrayal, Violet comes to terms with the fact that, no matter what signals he gave, Joe was not theirs to win. But Violet’s husband’s murderer is obsessed with her and heartbreak again haunts the door of the Winters home. When it does Joe is forced to face the knowledge that he can’t fight Violet’s pull, she’s under his skin and filled him full to bursting.
I am actually going to start my review by talking about the ending of the book which was simply amazing. I love a well written story that is wrapped up quite nicely with no loose ends that are left unanswered and KA is a master at writing those. She excels at giving the reader heart warming tales that leave me smiling way after I finished the book.
Now to one of my other favorite parts of the book, Joe who was the ultimate broken ALPHA, more so than any of other of KA’s heroes. He succeeded in making me so frustrated I almost screamed, needing for him to man up. Joe kept pushing Vi away and did it so cruelly (hurting her as well as her poor girls) that I wondered how Kristen Ashley will manage to give these two their HEA- It had me rooting for violet to find her HEA with another.
When I read what happened to Joe 17 years ago, my heart broke for him and I understood his need to push Vi away. I started seeing why he was one of the favorite KA heroes, I loved him around Violet’s girls who were two of the main reasons why I enjoyed this book so much, These girls had heart and sass just like their mum. Violet was amazing, an amazing mum and a great character whom you feel a connection with instantly. She was a combination of naivety, strength, vulnerability and loyalty.
I can’t write my review and not mention MIKE and the way my attention was seized from the moment he was introduced in the book. Mike was an honest, sexy badass and a total sweetheart if I wasn’t gushing over Joe and starting to imagine having his babies by the 70% mark, I would so have loved Vi to end up with Mike. Will be reading his book soon.
A great read, one I will reread again and again. Great characters, awesome chemistry between Vi and Joe, the right amount of angst, suspense and steam. Totally recommend.
