Our Rating : 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
I have but one word to describe this book…. “WOW!” I think this is another Alessandra Torre masterpiece. I remembered how mind buggingly amazing Sex Love Repeat was, how much I loved it. And now comes Black Lies… and it couldn’t be more shocking and wicked! My eyes were glued to the book once I started reading. It made me fall in love with Layana… then Brant… then Lee…
“This is a love story, but not one that is easy to read.”
As much as the synopsis is intriguingly interesting, I admit it also scared me… scared that I might not like the female protagonist. But, there is so much more to the story than meets the eye. This story is so diverse with a very wicked twist. Do not judge this book by the teaser of the synopsis, it isn’t what you think it is.
Layana comes from a rich family, she is a child of wealth. She was expected to do nothing but everything…. earn a respectable degree while being moulded into the perfect wife. Marry quickly. Support her husband while pursuing other interests, such as charity work and running her home.
And she hated every bit of it! And she thought she had it all planned. She would be the perfect daughter till her twenty-fifth birthday and she would have access to her trust fund and she can then do whatever she wants!
I needed to escape this life, I needed to find something different, I needed to make my own path, but it was hard to escape the only world I had ever known.
Then she met Brant… And their story begins…
It wasn’t long after I started reading the book that I was loving Layana. She is smart, unspoiled and beautiful. Then somewhere along the story, I question her character. I didn’t want to hate her but I was near screaming “what the hell are you doing?!” But soon as I thought my head was going to explode… doubt sets in. And then I felt her pain! It gutted me! And I knew then that I couldn’t love a more perfect female lead!
Soon as Brant entered the picture, I knew he was gonna be something amazing… And he was! I fell in love with Brant not too long after. And no, there was no instant love going on here… but it wasn’t also long after when both characters fell in love.
“>Love. It was no longer a strong word for our relationship. It was now the perfect word for our relationship. I loved this man. I could not imagine a life without him. He was the complement to my fears, a man firmly set into the trappings I desired, but with the independence and confidence to turn a blind eye to all of it.
Then comes Lee, the complete opposite of Brant. Whereas Brant is rich, polished, complete gentleman…. Lee cut’s grass for a living, he is rough around the edges, and can be real brusque. I have to admit, at the beginning, I really don’t get Layana’s obsession towards Lee cause Brant is perfect! But along the way, there’s just something about Lee that pulls you to him… thus making me love him too!
“I loved you. I still love you. Even when I hate you, I love you. I always will. I’m not a smart man, but I know that.” – Lee
And so the conflict of emotions begins!
Somewhere in the middle of the book, I was itching to sneak a peek to the ending cause it was complete torture! It was killing me! Around 60% of the book, I figured out that very wicked twist… but despite that, it still didn’t stop the creative genius of their story.
The sex scenes were sexy and classy.
What’s a good story without an evil villain. And that would be Jillian here. I hated her so much I wanna tie her up and feed her to the wolves! Ha! But, again, I loved the Epilogue that is about Jillian. Now that’s what I call “karma”. 😉
I wish to say more, but I can’t. I can only highly recommend this book! It is a MUST read if you want something different, something that will play with your emotions, your head… and might just surprise you in the end. 😉

I have to start this review by saying that I agree one 100% with Nance, I went through the same emotions as I was reading.
I love her completely. She returns the love wildly. This love is worth the unsaid truths. The hidden lies.
Black Lies is a beautiful piece of work, an intricate novel, Angsty, romantic, steamy, mindfuck, elegant, one which evokes many different emotions. I went in to read, fascinated by the blurb- I ended it, fascinated by the book as a whole. When I started, it was only to read the first few chapters and then leave it till later, I ended reading the whole book without pause, it was that GOOD.
Alessandra Torre writes fascinating heroines, vulnerable yet spirited, a mass of contradictions. One aspect that fascinates me is their strength, their willingness to fight for what they want; Layana is no different.
I could be with a thousand more and never find another Layana. She is beautiful, classy, but with a sharp edge that defines her personality, a thread of dark that complements all of her light. One that will cut you should you cross her. One that will fight for her wants, her needs, her opinions.
All I can say about BRANT, be still my heart, is that he IS EXQUISITE.
She is more than my broken self will ever deserve, but I can never let her go, she owns, whether she knows it or not, all parts of me, every inch of my body and soul.
Lee was such an appealing, flawed character, you just couldn’t help falling for him.
A destroyed man sat before me, his arms around his knees, a shiver against my soul. I had seen this man in so many different lights, but this was the weakest. This is the one that touched me deepest and hurt me the most.
There were moments that were hard for me to read, felt uncomfortable and scared as to what will happen next, scared for Layana. A wonderful novel with a clever scenario, filled with fully formed characters; A twisted plot, yet one that is poignant and hopeful. A MUST READ!!
