Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who’s bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.
Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn’t mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn’t: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…
My Rating : 4 Stars
I was hesitant to start this series cause I didn’t want to have to wait long for the sequel, the torture! Hehe. But I also was just too tempted to stop myself, who isn’t! Specially after such huge success on the Night Huntress Series! Which btw, I could not get enough of! It was just sad when that series ended. I still miss Bones and Cat. And will probably be re-reading the series again soon. Anyway, needless to say, I am diving in this one with I guess with some expectations. That part just cannot be helped. 😉
And surprise surprise, right away the action starts and it was non-stop! Wowser! I loved it!
Here we meet the heroine, Ivy, who is looking for her missing sister… And she realized what she thought were hallucinations of strange realms, were actually real! And that her sister is trapped in that parallel realm.
Enters our hero, the hot and mysterious, Adrian. He saved Ivy from the hands of a minion.. and then promised her he would help rescue her sister. But first, together, they’ll have to search for this powerful relic that can save her sister.
One of the things I liked and is quite intrigued about is the concept of the story/series. It is centred on destiny and prophecy that has something to do with a popular biblical story/stories . As much as I want to say what that prophecy or destiny is about but then it would be a total spoiler. So instead, I will just say that that powerful relic that they are looking for is David’s slingshot, from the story David and Goliath. I can’t help but loved the genius of the story.
Ivy’s, the heroine, character was off to a good start. She wasn’t whining or acting out after the shock of discovering the otherworld and being hunted by minions… I thought her reactions were pretty cool.
But, sigh, her character did fail me near the end. Betrayal is such big word in this story. But is it just me or does it feel like the person who is so afraid to be betrayed was the one who did the deed?! I’m sorry but I find it very hypocritical of her to be screaming “betrayal”, when all that other person did was help and protect her… and it’s not as if he had a choice! As if she has a choice too if she wanted to rescue her sister! That part just irked me.
That said… I feel for Adrian. He is paying penance for a past he had no choice of. And now he has to prove himself worthy?! The poor guy! The constant emotional battle… his fear… He needs to overcome all this and just be the bad-ass hero that I want him to be! Lol. Give me something! Anything! Lol. 😉
Okay, before I lose it… let’s just say, characters wise, I’d wished for more … more maturity maybe? 😉
But moving on…
I enjoyed and loved the humour, specially when Zach glamoured Ivy to look like an old guy… or to look like a hell hound. Well can you imagine this hound in leather bikini?
Those scenes were just too funny (in my head anyway) .
On to the romance area, there is the attraction and sexual tension… then there is this supposedly “bond between them” that grows every moment they spent together. And while I did felt that attraction…. when it comes to love? Not so much.
I loved the non-stop action and suspense… And that much awaited turning point of the story was really fascinating. I keep picture it like a movie with special effects, hehe… 😀
If I were to rate this accordingly, I’d say :

Worldbuilding : 5 Stars

Action & Suspense : 5 Stars
Romance : 3.5 Stars
A great start of a series. I find it different. Definitely looking forward to the next one.
