When Rachel’s father fails to return from a courier mission and is declared dead, the city’s brutal Commander assigns Rachel a new Protector: her father’s apprentice, Logan—the boy she declared her love to and who turned her down two years before. Left with nothing but fierce belief in her father’s survival, Rachel decides to escape and find him herself.

As Rachel and Logan battle their way through the Wasteland, stalked by a monster that can’t be killed and an army of assassins out for blood, they discover romance, heartbreak, and a truth that will incite a war decades in the making.

My Rating : 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is one of those that if I were to rate the writing alone, it’s a 5! Has completely captured my attention from start to finish. Though I find I’ve read or watched a somewhat same story, the worldbuilding and flow of the story was flawless.

This is a post apocalyptic fantasy romance, I’d say in between YA and NA, though it says YA…. In a time where there are huge scary monster/creatues that lives in the Wasteland and the people protects themselves from said creature in a walled-in City. And in this particular city where the two lead characters resides, it is being ruled by a very brutal commander whom everybody obeys no matter what because he promised them protection against said monster.

When the 16 years old Rachel’s father failed to return from his mission, he was then declared dead… And per her fathers last will/request, he left Logan, her father’s 19 years old apprentice, as her new Protector, which didn’t sit nicely with Rachel since years back, she professed her love towards Logan and he turned her down.

And despite the fact that they have declared her father dead, she believes he is still out there, so she decided that she is going to escape and find her father. This is how Rachel and Logan’s story began….

At the beginning, I almost gave up liking Rachel. She was too temperamental, impulsive and reckless. There were so many times I just want to smack her. But further along their story, she grew on me slowly, kind of, lol… Not quite there yet though. I loved that she is quite brave and though reckless, she has good intentions.

But Logan, he is the epitome of a perfect male protagonist…. He is smart, patient, brave and a great fighter… Logan though carries a lot of hurt from his past. And since this is only the first part of the series, it feels like there is more to his story than meets the eyes.

And then there is of course the most hated villain, the commander, Jason Chase… He is shockingly sooo brutal and scary. I thought he was scarier than that monster that terrorizes the villagers.

This was easy to get myself absorbed into… it is action packed and edgy…. and at times, it could get real heartbreaking. Although there were moments that runs to predictable, it doesn’t hinder it’s momentum.

I enjoyed all the action scenes, specially when it reached the highlight of the story. But, there were moments there that something went wrong and it was left that way, unanswered. I am hoping that would be answered on the next book. Cause that moment got me all confused too.

Though the ending wasn’t so much as a cliffhanger, this felt more like this is just the beginning. 😉 💋
