3.5 Stars!

Finally, I finished it!!! I was close to giving up on the book. I watched the movie and much as I wasn’t totally blown away with the movie, it was still good, made me curious on how the book would be. And after reading this, I couldn’t decide wether the book was better or the movie as I can’t help by comparing them. 😉

The thing I loved that they did with the movie, they cut the dragging part… there is this super long history exploring that they had going in this book that was just too uninteresting cause it dragged on and on. I hated that. 😦 Anyway….

It all happened in Gatlin, South Carolina. A town that hasn’t adopted the modern world…. a very uncomplicated place, where there are no Walmart, or Starbucks… where neighbours keeps watch from their porches even when nothing ever changes. That is until Lena Duchannes came into town.

15 years old Lena moved to stay with her uncle Macon Melchizedek Ravenwood, who is known as the town shut-in, or the town’s crazy, or that witch who lives on a haunted mansion, and it doesn’t help that he has never been seen in town. So, Lena, in association, is also a freak, a witch… just like her uncle, and that everyone should STAY AWAY from her.

But what they don’t know is that, they couldn’t be further from the truth… Lena is a Caster (a (witch), and is going to be an even more powerful caster when she reaches the age of sixteen. Cause Lena is cursed, simply put, on her sixteenth birthday, Lena’s fate has already been decided. And it DOES NOT sound good.

Enters Lena’s knight and shining armor, Ethan Wate. 😉

To cut the story short, Ethan and Lena bonded together with their powerful love, as they desperately search for a way to break Lena’s curse before time runs out. And this is besides the evil bitches in school and their crazy religious parents who will stop at nothing to make Lena’s life miserable. Picture these bullies in school with condescending mothers and this barely 16 years old girl against all of them… Drives me crazy mad!

I enjoyed reading Ethan’s POV… it’s somehow always different when it’s a male POV, even with him being a teen…. He sounds adorable and the perfect boyfriend…. so down to earth, smart and devoted… I loved how he fights for Lena.

Lena also has a very likeable character. She dreams of simple things: to go to school, be able to experience school prom, and watch a movie with her boyfriend…. I love how she tries so hard not to let the haters get to her, despite everything they have done to her.

This has a very interesting plot line… but like I said, too dragging, as it digs on the history of Gatlin County as they find seek answers re Lena’s curse. It took me a long while to finish reading this book as I had to take a long in between breaks to continue reading. 😦

But, with that said… OMG, the climatic scene made it all worth it! It completely held me in suspense while anxiously waiting what happens next cause it isn’t the same as what was shown in the movie! I thought the book was way better…. Even when I didn’t quite get where and when Ethan and Macon switched in the end, haha… Oh well…. I’m sure it’s there and I might have missed it.

There’s also that scene where the school committee or the almost entire town’s people wanted to expel Lena from school and Macon saved the day, I thought the book did a way better version. 😉

Great world building, specially the Ravenwood Manor with its constantly changing theme.

As for the supporting characters, I thought Ridley, Lena’s cousin who is a Siren, was super cool! She sounds way better here than the Ridley in the movie. Yeah she was bad, but she’s never really done anything harmful. I loved what she did in the prom, hehe. Too bad they cut that part out of the movie too.

And same goes with Link. He was absolutely the perfect friend. He is funny, sweet and a really good person. He makes me want to protect him. He also sounds way cooler here than in the movie, specially when he proved himself in the end with his band, another scene that was not in the movie… which is too bad. I like the lyrics of the songs that Lena wrote. 😀

I could say more, but then I’d be writing a book! You know, those 3 pages books they sell in amazon, LOL.. kidding… NOT! 😉

Definitely want to read the next book, but I am really hoping it won’t be as slow as this one. 😀
