Chase the Dark (Steel & Stone #1) by Annette Marie

1
Piper Griffiths wants one thing in life: To become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. There are precisely three obstacles in her way.

The first is Lyre. Incubus. Hotter than hell and with a wicked streak to match. His greatest mission in life is to get Piper into bed and otherwise annoy the crap out of her. The second is Ash. Draconian. Powerful. Dangerous. He knows too much and reveals nothing. Also, disturbingly attractive — and scary. Did she mention scary?

The third is the Sahar Stone. Top secret magical weapon of mass destruction. Previously hidden in her Consulate until thieves broke in, went on a murder spree, and disappeared with the weapon.

And they left Piper to take the fall for their crimes.

Now she’s on the run, her dreams of becoming a Consul shattered and every daemon in the city gunning to kill her. She’s dead on her own, but there’s no one she can trust — no one except two entirely untrustworthy daemons… See problems one and two.

I loved this!!!!

We got two sexy daemon heroes. First, there’s Lyre an Incubus who is “hotter than hell”, he has a fun and flirtatious personality and loves to constantly tease Piper. Then there’s Ash, a Draconian. He is powerful, dangerous and scary. Personality wise, he is the exact opposite of Lyre. Both makes the perfect heroes. But yes, I do love one of them more :D… I am a sucker for powerful and intense alpha. And Ash pretty much falls into that category. 😉

Now the heroine, Piper, a Haemon, meaning she is half human, half daemon. She also has a quite loveable character. She is sweet and although she lacks magic, she can kick ass! Her sole purpose is to become a Consul, a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons, and make her father proud, who happens to be the head of the Consulate.

But when someone went to steal the Sahar Stone, a top secret magical weapon of mass destruction, leaving behind bodies of dead people… Piper was left to take the fall for the crime.

So now, Piper is on the run with no one to trust except the two daemon, Lyre and Ash. But could she trust them?

This is a fast paced, heart pumping action packed book. Given there is no romance involved (yet), it is high on sexual tension! And with just the right amount of humour.

It didn’t take long for me to be drawn in the story. It comes with a lot of surprising twists. It is magical, we got all sorts of daemons and underworld creatures… And great world building.

Since this is just the start of a series, the ending left me desperate for the next book… which is already out for pre-order in Amazon. And, incidentally, the first book is free for kindle unlimited subscribers.

Ms. Annette Marie is definitely going up on my list of authors to watch for.

One of my favourite scenes were when Piper, in exchanged for an information they needed, ended up in the fight ring. A no-holds-barred fight… with daemons… Not to the death, but the fighters will not stop until someone is beaten unconscious. It is a must-read. I wanted to copy that scene here but considering I think it is one of the highlight of the story, I should refrain from doing so. 😀
