The Thousand-Dollar Tan Line (Veronica Mars #1) by Rob Thomas, Jennifer Graham

vernonica mars
From Rob Thomas, the creator of groundbreaking television series and movie Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling new mystery series.

Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She’s traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.
Now it’s spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is not a simple missing person’s case. The house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica’s past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.

four-stars

The t.v. series, Veronica Mars, ended 2007.. then it continued years later, 2014, in a movie. Then comes this book series….And I couldn’t be any happier! I am more than happy… I am grateful! 😀

If you missed the t.v. series and the movie, this might get a little bit confusing and would fail to get most of the humour. But, the good thing is, the complete season of the t.v. series are on Netflix or on dvd… and the movie is also out on dvd/blu-ray. 😉

Veronica Mars is compared to, or described as a modern day Nancy Drew.

The book picks up where the movie left off… An all grown up Veronica Mars, who finally got her law degree which she traded for her old private investigating license . I kinda feel like her dad, although, where her dad wished she became a lawyer, I wished she worked with the FBI instead! 😀

BUT still, , I love the very cute, pretty, smart and saucy, Veronica Mars! I may not agree with all her choice of actions.. like jumping head on and putting herself in danger, as oppose to playing it safer… But then again, I guess, it wouldn’t be Veronica Mars and she is back!!! 😀

And all because of Logan! Well, he was one of the reason she came back. Although, in this book, Logan is still away, serving in the navy…

Sigh…. (Btw, whatever happened to Piz? Hmm…)

Moving on!!!

I had so many questions after the movie! Some of it were answered here…. As Veronica takes on a case of a missing teenage girl who was last seen attending a spring break party.

I got nothing but high praises for the writers of this series. They made a most excellent job depicting this urban beach town, Neptune, where the residents are divided into either the rich billionaires or the middle and lower income ones. A town ruled by crime and corruption.

The story is up to beat or fast paced, with just the perfect amount of angst, drama and humour… The mystery had me second guessing all the way! Yet, it still surprised me in the end. I enjoyed every twist and turns of the story. Also, this time, the case is more dangerous than usual cases Veronica use to solve. (In other words, she’s taking on grown up cases now! 😉 )

It is nice to be reunited with Veronica, Mac, Wallace, and Logan again… they have certainly gone a long way.

I am still left with so many questions though… Like, where is justice on Deputy Jerry Sacks death which also almost killed Keith? What about Eli being framed with that gun? But if I learned from the way the t.v. series went, the story does sometimes stray to solve a certain crime, but then it does goes back to the unsolved issues.

This definitely is one of my favourite series… , be it on t.v., movie and/or book!

Rumour has it that Logan is back on the next book, so, Yay! Can’t wait to read that!
