In The Afterlight (The Darkest Minds #3) by Alexandra Bracken

the darkest minds
Ruby can’t look back. Fractured by an unbearable loss, she and the kids who survived the government’s attack on Los Angeles travel north to regroup. With them is a prisoner: Clancy Gray, son of the president, and one of the few people Ruby has encountered with abilities like hers. Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds.

They are armed only with a volatile secret: proof of a government conspiracy to cover up the real cause of IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others like her with powers the government will kill to keep contained. But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the “rehabilitation camps” housing thousands of other Psi kids.

Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would-and did-sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. She turns to Cole, his older brother, to provide the intense training she knows she will need to take down Gray and the government. But Cole has demons of his own, and one fatal mistake may be the spark that sets the world on fire.

4.5 to 5 Stars!!!

How to survive a world where at age 10, not understanding what is happening around her,  suddenly her parents don’t remember her as their child…   And she realized she has this powerful ability that branded her as danger to the society! Then the government just suddenly takes her and sends her to  “supposedly” a rehabilitation camp, but instead the place is worst than prison…  as she and kids like her,  are treated like a bunch of horrible animals. Years passed before she’s finally escaped! This is how Ruby’s story started…

For my review on the first book of the series, click here : The Darkest Minds

A lot has happened since then… on the second book, we follow Ruby, where she is then working with a group whose mission is to bring down the corrupt government, and where she’s became a Leader. Lost friends and love she’s lost are found.

On this third instalment… we continue to follow Ruby’s struggles for survival and her fight to  save children that are still trapped on those camps. Where Ruby and her group travels north to regroup as they finally got answers regarding what had caused IAAN, the disease that has killed most of America’s children and left Ruby and others like her with powers that the government will kill to keep contained.  And as they continue to try to expose the government’s conspiracy on covering everything up.

This is such a most excellently written, awesome dystopian series! The story builds up higher and higher,  better and best! It is dark, edgy and emotional! It  made me anxious and eager!  I was mentally and emotionally  invested, easily captivated by its story… It brought me in tears, a lot, and left me on a  huge book hangover.

There were more than one highlight in this book finale… but that climatic highlight near the end? Perfection! With great world building.. Fantastic cast of characters.. with  Ruby, a most likeable, loveable and relatable heroine. I will miss Ruby and Liam, Chubs, Zu and Vida and will remember those that were lost…

Thank you Ms. Alexandra Bracken for such an amazing adventure!

I definitely highly recommend!

(Just one thing though, what happened to Sam and the Reds in her camp? That’s the only one big thing that I kept me thinking back.)
