On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is…different: Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can’t leave the grounds because she’s responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, “normal” is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night….Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans—an alpha-strain werewolf—and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she’s facing is unlike anything she’s ever encountered before. It’s smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.

It never cease to amaze me how authors could have such amazing imaginations and create a magical and fascinating stories. In Clean Sweep, I am, once again, taken to an all new fun adventure!
Dina, in the outside, is this ordinary lady, who manages a victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small town of Texas. An innkeeper with her broom, who owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and the perfect neighbour.
But Dina, is anything but ordinary. She wields a powerful magic.. and her broom is a deadly weapon… The inn is also magic and thinks for itself…. The inn is meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors. It is considered as a neutral ground, a sort of sanctuary .
The story starts off with a brutal killing on a neighbourhood dog, the third dog killed in a week. And Dina, feeling responsible for her neighbourhood, decided to get involved. Next thing she knew, Dina is left dealing with her attractive, ex military, neighbour, Sean, who is also an alpha-strain werewolf (and will do anything to protect his territory, which includes the inn and the innkeeper)… and Arland, an equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier… all the while protecting the inn and facing a smart, vicious and lethal creature.
Ilona Andrews writing is once again, flawless. The world building is fascinating. I am thinking Harry Potter’s Diagon alley, you know when they open a portal and walah! Only it opens to star wars galactic planets where you’ll find assorted aliens. It is not often that I would read a paranormal book that entails monsters, werewolves and vampires that are actually Aliens! I had to re-read that area twice to fully comprehend their background. But once I did, I thought it was odd yet cool and unique. 😉
Now the inn, Gertrude Hunt Bed-and-Breakfast, is magical! It renovates by itself! Well, with Dina and the tap of her broom of course…
I tapped the floor with the broom, letting my magic stream through it and down into the floor, into the walls, into the laboratory table below us. I pushed. Wood and metal flowed like molten wax. A long, narrow fissure formed in the floor of the living room. The wood dripped down, the hole widened, and the lab table emerged..
And so so much more…. A combination of science fiction and paranormal.. fantasy and magic.
The story flowed smoothly.. with an equally interesting storyline. A lot of action and thrill… And a powerful climatic scene…. Love the humour too!
“House of Krahr greets the innkeeper,” the older vampire said. “We wish you no ill will.”
“Would you like to come in?” I asked.
“We must regretfully decline,” the older vampire said. “I’m Lord Soren, son of Rok, son of Gartena, Baron of Nur Castle.”
“Dina Demille, daughter of Gerard and Helen. My lord, why are you wearing trench coats?”
“We must blend in,” he said. “This is a covert operation.”
Don’t laugh, don’t laugh, don’t laugh… “It’s very hot,” I said. “Trench coats are a cold-weather garment.”
Sean cleared his throat. “Half a dozen big guys in ill-fitting trench coats pouring out of black Hummers into the Texas heat? Are you sure you meant covert and not showy?”
Lord Soren’s bushy eyebrows came together. “Is there a warm-weather alternative?”
“Rain ponchos,” Sean said. “If it’s raining. Otherwise, oversize football jerseys and helmets are your best bet.”
Gotta love Sean! He is funny, adorable and the perfect alpha male.
Every character are very well written.
Another Ilona Andrew’s masterpiece. I am such a fan. 😀
Romance? Not so much…. But there is that huge attraction and a promise with a two hot alpha males. I am rooting for Sean of course. But the series just started so who knows! I hope there won’t be a love triangle in the future though. 😉
A pretty darn good start of a series, doesn’t end on a cliffy… I highly recommend!
