Feelings are a luxury I can’t afford. Hidden behind a shield of quiet placidity, I keep my secret safe from those who’d use it against me. Until him—the tatted up, self-centered Scar assassin hired to protect me.
He takes pleasure in tormenting me, chipping away at my defenses as if I’m a toy to be played with. I hate that he continuously reminds me that I’m nothing more than a job. I hate that my body responds to his touch. I hate him.
I’m not a good guy and I don’t pretend to be. Condemn me if you want, I don’t give a fuck. You’re nothing to me. No one is … except her—Max. She’s my target. And I was hired to do a hell of a lot more than protect her … I was hired to kill her.
It should’ve been simple, but it was complicated as hell.

Max is not only a healer but she also possesses this other ability that she has kept secret. At the age of ten, she was kidnapped, and used as a personal healer by Drake, the villain of the story.
Six years later, she was rescued and now (fast forward 4 years), scarred and scared, she tries to stay hidden and has put up a shield of not showing any emotions.
Then she met Jasper. Jasper is a Scar. (Scars are “Immortal warriors with capabilities derived from the senses: Trackers, Sounders, Healers, Tasters, Visionaries, and the rare Reflectors. They each have what is known as an Ink, a tattoo that can be called life.”) He is also arrogant and a player.
Needless to say, these two became obsessed with each other. And most of their story is spent fighting their attraction.
Then comes Drake, who found out what Max’s secret ability was and is now out to get her back. And Jasper is the assassin hired to protect (
or kill?) Max.
I was instantly captured by the story, intrigued by it. I enjoyed Max and Jasper’s banter, with Jasper constantly pushing Max’s boundary…
They definitely have their hot moments. 😉 Don’t forget, this is a paranormal romance with a erotic element .
I liked Max, but I wish her character was built up more. I enjoyed Jasper’s cockiness, not so much with his repeat liners, but still, he makes one hot alpha male.
The story goes fast, so fast in fact that I got confused for a bit, specifically with the characters; what they are, who they were and what is their part or what is their play in the story. To the end, my head is still on question mark about Xamien, Waleron, Adrian and the others. Can I say, setting aside Max and Jasper, the background of the story just felt a little bit underdeveloped? Just my opinion. 😉
It is action-packed, suspenseful and funny. I really enjoyed the highlighted thrilling scene near the end.
A stand alone. Max and Jasper’s story ended in a good note and much as I liked it, I was really left thinking, “was that it?” But…. that could just be me wanting more. 😉
Written in dual POV.
