With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.
Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.
While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

My two favourite book characters, Reyes and Charley are back! And reading through Charley’s head is, as always, crazy, like laugh out loud crazy! Just one of the things that I loved about this series. With Charley, it’s never a dull moment. Then, there is Reyes, the hot hot hot, intense, sexy, dreamy, over protective Reyes. I love him. And he is gonna be a daddy!
And, there is still that never ending battle agains Reyes father, Lucifer, and the prophecy that they are still trying to decipher. Though there wasn’t much happening here around these issues. 😦 Well, not till the end anyway.
The story picks up with an eight months pregnant Charley and they had no choice but to take refuge on an abandoned convent whose sacred grounds the twelve hellhounds could not enter. And of course, where Charley goes, everybody goes… meaning Cookie, Amber, Osh, Garrett, Uncle Bob,Quentin, and more. I loved how they’ve become a team, a very dysfunctional family.
While Charlie might be forbidden to step foot outside the sacred grounds, it doesn’t stop her from falling into trouble the Charley way. 😉
Still, this isn’t as action packed or as crazy as the previous books, but felt more like the calm before the storm?! More like an intro for something huge that is about to happen?!
But still, I loved the humour, the hot and sexy romance, the group dynamic, and the edge of your seat climatic moment with that unexpected surprises. But what really got me was the aftermath. I was crashed!! A bit heartbroken and shocked!
I can’t wait for what happens next!
Charley is back and with her the humor, the real honest emotions and action, not to mention romance . For me the humor never gets old, it’s always a hoot to be in Charley’s head whether she is lamenting about the future or drooling over Reyes; Reyes is also back, of-course he is, wherever our Charley is, we find Reyes and the rest of the gang with their great banter and familiar dynamics.
Reyes and Charley together are a pleasure to read about, my favorite were the scenes at the wedding and with the kids. Reyes is as intense as ever, protective as usual. I cannot not mention Cookie, one of the best characters I have read about; her loyalty and love for Charley are present and strong in this book as with the previous installments.
I have to admit that while I enjoyed this book greatly as with every book in the series, the first half seemed to drag and I was a bit frustrated, the second half more than made up for it- especially everything which occurred in the last 20% of the book. We have some answers but there are still unanswered questions which I hope are revealed in the next book; I did read the blurb for book 9 and now I want to read it so badly (don’t read the blurb if you haven’t read book 8).
A few scenes in this book made me tear up, charley’s emotions even when humorous are so palatable and she is such a relatable character. I won’t give anything away, Reyes was so swoon worthy in this book, I wanted to get in the pages and hug him ( have to keep it PG rated for Charley’s sake).
What irked me most about this novel was Gemma sticking up for Denise, I mean Gemma “COME ON!”, not to mention Charley’s dad and his behaviour!
With all my misgivings about the beginning of the book where I felt not much was happening or resolved, this ended up being one enjoyable book; strong plot, great interactions and that twist! ( Charley you are stronger than this, you can overcome anything), I hope book 9 is not too far away. Read this if only for the chapter headings.
