Missing by Kelley Armstrong

The only thing Winter Crane likes about Reeve’s End is that soon she’ll leave it. Like her best friend did. Like her sister did. Like most of the teens born in town have done. There’s nothing for them there but abandoned mines and empty futures. They’re better off taking a chance elsewhere.

The only thing Winter will miss is the woods. Her only refuge. At least it was. Until the day she found Lennon left for dead, bleeding in a tree.

But now Lennon is gone too. And he has Winter questioning what she once thought was true. What if nobody left at all? What if they’re all missing?

Nancy's Review

I wanted to give this all the stars when it comes to Kelley Armstrong’s writing cause they just flows so smoothly that I am completely mesmerize from start to end. The mystery of the story often kept me wondering and guessing. Eighty-five percent through, I had my suspicion and I was completely wrong.

When that climatic scene came, with all the reveals, it all came so fast that I was taken by surprise! And that is good! All that gripping and shocking scenes. But there were also still some scenes that still baffled me. Like say for example: how did the culprit(s) easily removed everything, leaving no trace of evidence? But despite all the bit disappointing wrap up, I still enjoyed this to the point of not putting the book down and finishing it in one setting.

I picked up the book without reading the blurb because well, it’s Kelly Armstrong! 😉 But if you don’t already know, this story revolves around this small old town called Reeve’s End, where there is absolutely nothing but abandoned mines and zero future. So, for all or most teens of Reeve’s End, they can’t wait to get out of there. And that includes Winter Crane. Although Winter do loves the woods. And it’s in these woods, near her refuge cabin, that she rescued Lennon, who was bleeding in a tree. Then, Lennon disappears. And the questions and hunt starts here.

It’s on single point of view. Winter’s character, the lead female protagonist, is very easy to get into. She is smart, strong and soft inside. Lennon and Jude, has both distinguish mysterious characters that I also liked.

It’s fast paced, very mysterious, frighteningly weird, there is suspense, lots of action, with sprinkle of romance.

What an amazing series and writer. May is such a long wait for the next book but it’s so worth it!

I was searching for a book that has librarian and magic in it, what inspired me to do that is a long story, anyway, that search lead me to this series, thank God! It is so so good! Here we have an apprentice librarian, Vhalla Yarl, who is sweet, innocent and smart, turned into a sorcerer and not just any sorcerer, but a powerful one, a windbreaker. Then there’s the prince, Aldrin, the crown prince, a fire lord, whom Vhalla accidentally bonded and later fell in love with. Both have to fight to keep each other and fight for the war they are facing. And so much more!

I love how Vhalla’s character grew, and though she is stronger and has grown into this powerful person, yet her vulnerability remains.

There is so much to say about all the  characters and the storyline, I’ll some it up to just breathtakingly, heartrendingly good. I could not get enough on the awesome action scenes, it’s like I’m there and I want to edge them on, like “go go go, fight, run!” Lol. And the romance, it’s heartbreaking, there is so much angst, specially in this third part of the series. It makes me want to scream “Enough!” specially for Vhal.

Aldrik and Vhal,  together, with such intense feelings and their combined power, it was so beautiful to read I could cry. 🙂

I’ll just stop my review here and just leave a sample of one of my favourite action scenes :

“Wind Demon,” the man growled, his sword at her chin. The other Northerner was behind her. He allowed Vhalla to sit, which was his first mistake. He spat a few words at her in a language she didn’t understand, and Vhalla took the opportunity to twist her wrist and magically jerk the sword from his hand. Vhalla turned her head and watched it impale the eye of the Northerner behind her.
A boot met her temple and Vhalla rolled, overcompensating for the man’s second sword plunging into the ground next to her. Vhalla grasped the weapon from the fallen Northerner’s face, then stood on shaky legs. The man took a careful step in a wide arc, and the forest seemed to hold its breath as she stared him down.
The tension quivered, then broke.
Vhalla lunged, letting the man disarm her. He grinned wildly in false triumph and Vhalla’s palm clamped over his mouth. His face exploded with Vhalla’s cry of anguish as she forced every last ounce of power she had in her down his throat and outward. Covered in blood, shaking, Vhalla turned her eyes skyward.
“Run!” she screamed. “Run or suffer the fate of your friends.” The last warrior hovered in the trees above her. Vhalla didn’t know if they understood her words, but she knew what they had seen.
“Run fast, for you will need to outrun the wind!”

And one of my favourite romantic liners: ( a scene where Aldrik presented Vhal with a gift, a pocket watch as a symbol of a promise)

“You wished for time,” Aldrik explained. “I heard each utterance when you beseeched time to stop, for mornings not to come. I want you to know I shared your every sentiment. I wanted to give you the promise of my minutes, my hours, my days.” His long fingers curled around hers, around the watch. “My future is yours, Vhalla Yarl.”

I am officially a huge fan of Ms. Elise Kova, what a treasure to find! One the best fantasy-magic-romance series that I’ve read this year.

What an intense ticking clock explosive climatic scene and a sweet, funny and suggestive ending!

Love these ruthless people!

The Mafia princess :

The Mafia king :

Together, they are explosive!!!

Like I said at the start of this series, you had me at “Mr. & Mrs. Smith meets the Sopranos… A romantic modern day crime fiction”.

1 Marriage x 2 Bosses = 3x the Chaos

This series has everything! Loads of action, suspense, hot intense romance, humour and more! Need I say more?

If you love hot mafia romance with characters that are really tough, kicks ass and ruthless (not the bunny loving type but one the would get off in torturing people), then this series is for you. The plot only gets better and bigger from the first book to this third and final instalment. Climatic scene was explosive, literally, and it’s written in multi POV’s that lets you know who is who and what is what,,, BUT despite that, there are still surprises in the corner!

Marvellously written!!!! Just stunning!

Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements #3) by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

Every Last Breath (The Dark Elements, #3)

I so want to love this, but all in all, I did like it… it just didn’t live up to the first book which is still by far my favourite.

The story picks up where it left off, where the Lilin has taken over Sam’s body. So now, Layla, the heroine, has to find a way to save Sam’s soul and defeat the Lilin! Then, of course, there’s that love triangle… so, who does she choose? Roth or Zayne?

I’ll start off with the things I enjoyed :

1 – There is some character growth as Layla once more evolves or develops to what she is, and as the story digs more into her background, about Lilith. (Although sometimes her character fluctuates.)
2 – Finally, Layla picked who I thought was the right one, hehe. I know, if you’ve followed this series, you would guess who that is too.
3 – I enjoyed the humour, specially the scene where Layla was taunting Elijah, her evil father. Even a scene that I don’t think was intended to be funny I thought was funny… like Lilith’s interaction with Layla the first time, I thought it was comical, Lilith sounded more like the child!
4 – The idea of their familiar, I loved that!
5 – World building.
6 – The heartwarming/touching scenes.
7 – Then, of course, the romance, it was sweet, funny, and hot…. BUT….

Here is where I did not like :

After all that action, mystery and suspense on the previous books, what happened? Let’s just say, it was a bit of a disappointment, that it felt lacking, like there’s supposedly so much more happening but not. It felt like there was more romance and given a little action and then everything was rounded off. The supposedly highlight was, sad to say, predictable and anti-climatic. Sigh. And as much as I loved the romance, I also found it cheesy, somehow, it kinda overpowered the whole story. 😦

Then, there’s those witches… when they came to collect… and then what? What of Bambi? Was that it? Ugh!

I love Roth! He is sweet, funny and hot! Though it seems like his character is more tamed here. I also love Zayne, despite that he wasn’t given much part here. It is too bad that this is only under Layla’s POV.

Like I said, I didn’t love it, but I did like it. It was easy to fall back into the story and be caught up and it is fast paced. It is a given that Jennifer Armentrout is an amazing writer and that I am a fan and I look forward to reading more of her novels!

Eighth Grave After Dark (Charley Davidson #8) by Darynda Jones

With twelve hellhounds after her, pregnant Charley Davidson takes refuge at the only place she thinks they can’t get to her: the grounds of an abandoned convent. But after months of being cooped up there, Charley is ready to pop. Both metaphorically and literally since she is now roughly the size of a beached whale. Fortunately, a new case has captured her attention, one that involves a murder on the very grounds the team has taken shelter upon. A decades-old murder of the newly-vowed nun she keeps seeing in the shadows is almost enough to pull her out of her doldrums.

Charley’s been forbidden to step foot off the sacred grounds. While the angry hellhounds can’t traverse the consecrated soil, they can lurk just beyond its borders. They have the entire team on edge, especially Reyes. And if Charley didn’t know better, she would swear Reyes is getting sick. He grows hotter with every moment that passes, his heat scorching across her skin every time he’s near, but naturally he swears he’s fine.

While the team searches for clues on the Twelve, Charley just wants answers and is powerless to get them. But the mass of friends they’ve accrued helps. They convince her even more that everyone in her recent life has somehow been drawn to her, as though they were a part of a bigger picture all along. But the good feelings don’t last for long because Charley is about to get the surprise of her crazy, mixed-up, supernatural life….

   Nancy’s Thoughts~~~~~

My two favourite book characters, Reyes and Charley are back! And reading through Charley’s head is, as always, crazy, like laugh out loud crazy! Just one of the things that I loved about this series. With Charley, it’s never a dull moment. Then, there is Reyes, the hot hot hot, intense, sexy, dreamy, over protective Reyes. I love him. And he is gonna be a daddy!

And, there is still that never ending battle agains Reyes father, Lucifer, and the prophecy that they are still trying to decipher. Though there wasn’t much happening here around these issues. 😦 Well, not till the end anyway.

The story picks up with an eight months pregnant Charley and they had no choice but to take refuge on an abandoned convent whose sacred grounds the twelve hellhounds could not enter. And of course, where Charley goes, everybody goes… meaning Cookie, Amber, Osh, Garrett, Uncle Bob,Quentin, and more. I loved how they’ve become a team, a very dysfunctional family.

While Charlie might be forbidden to step foot outside the sacred grounds, it doesn’t stop her from falling into trouble the Charley way. 😉

Still, this isn’t as action packed or as crazy as the previous books, but felt more like the calm before the storm?! More like an intro for something huge that is about to happen?!

But still, I loved the humour, the hot and sexy romance, the group dynamic, and the edge of your seat climatic moment with that unexpected surprises. But what really got me was the aftermath. I was crashed!! A bit heartbroken and shocked!

I can’t wait for what happens next!

Silvana’s thoughts~~~~

Charley is back and with her the humor, the real honest emotions and action, not to mention romance . For me the humor never gets old, it’s always a hoot to be in Charley’s head whether she is lamenting about the future or drooling over Reyes; Reyes is also back, of-course he is, wherever our Charley is, we find Reyes and the rest of the gang with their great banter and familiar dynamics.

Reyes and Charley together are a pleasure to read about, my favorite were the scenes at the wedding and with the kids. Reyes is as intense  as ever, protective as usual. I cannot not mention Cookie, one of the best characters I have read about; her loyalty and love for Charley are present and strong in this book as with the previous installments.

I have to admit that while I enjoyed this book greatly as with every book in the series, the first half seemed to drag and I was a bit frustrated, the second half more than made up for it- especially everything which occurred in the last 20% of the book. We have some answers but there are still unanswered questions which I hope are revealed in the next book; I did read the blurb for book 9 and now I want to read it so badly (don’t read the blurb if you haven’t read book 8).

A few scenes in this book made me tear up, charley’s emotions even when humorous are so palatable and she is such a relatable character. I won’t give anything away, Reyes was so swoon worthy in this book, I wanted to get in the pages and hug him ( have to keep it PG rated for Charley’s sake).

What irked me most about this novel was Gemma sticking up for Denise,  I mean Gemma “COME ON!”, not to mention Charley’s dad and his behaviour!

With all my misgivings about the beginning of the book where I felt not much was happening  or resolved, this ended up being one enjoyable book; strong plot, great interactions and that twist! ( Charley you are stronger than this, you can overcome anything), I hope book 9 is not too far away. Read this if only for the chapter headings.
