Rhapsody on a Theme (Vivaldi in the Dark #3) by Matthew J. Metzger

Sequel to The Devil’s Trill Sonata

Although their relationship has been repaired since the disaster that was Cambridge, Darren has not. His depression has worsened over the years until it is no longer an option to watch the illness play out its patterns. Treatment is a must.

Treatment is also a difficult disaster. When the second attempt at medication goes as badly wrong as the first, and Darren is forced through a rapid deterioration of mood swings, insomnia, nausea and increasingly dangerous thought patterns, his partner Jayden begins to fear that the only end to this disease will also be the end of Darren himself.

Apart from a single glimmer of hope: when Darren’s best friend asks Darren to play at his wedding, Darren begins to slowly return to the half-forgotten piano. As he slowly sinks back into the music that he deserted seven years earlier, the shadows — finally — begin to fade.

Mare's Review

Whoa. What a ride with this trilogy.

From the 1st page of book 1, Vivaldi in the Dark, to the last page of book 3, Rhapsody on a Theme.

The genre is Young Adult.  Although book 3 follows more into adulthood, these 3 books stay true to YA.

The sex scenes aren’t really scenes. The nitty and gritty will only fully be sprung within your imagination. This romance follows 2 boys and depression.

I won’t go into major details of the book because I feel everyone should self discover the joy of reading and not have it ruined for you.  I will tell you that it does deal with depression and Matthew J. Metzger keeps it real. The details, the dark world Darren lives in sometimes can be felt within the pages of this trilogy.  You hurt when he hurts and you breathe when he is out from under the dark cloud.

Depression is a real illness that I feel doesn’t get it’s due as it should. Happy people could never understand what depression is really like.  Most will harp that said person could just snap out of it. Unfortunately it isn’t so. In Darren’s world he had Jayden, who is by far a pretty amazing guy. Especially for a young teenager/adult who are usually selfish. But Jayden was raised by a single mother for some time, and I know for a fact. as I was a single mom for a time myself, that those kids are different. Worldly, more sensitive, more mature than their respective peers. Adults in child size bodies.

The road for Darren and Jayden was a long one, mostly depressing, and we finally get that HEA for these 2.

The supporting characters were great, especially Livvy who I feel a deep connection with as our similarities could be 1 and the same.

While YA isn’t typically my go to genre because you know I got a kid that age, it just feels wrong to me lol, I recommend this series to all. Its not an easy read, but to me the more angsty a book the better, but it is worth your time. Darren and Jayden are memorable and will stay with you.  Matthew J. Metzger is a great story-teller and I will def be reading more of his work.

4 stars for the overall series

Silvana's Review Nancy's Review

First and foremost, our Congratulations to Ms. Joanna Wylde for making the “Devil’s Game”  the Romantic Times Magazine Top Pick!

With that said….  we got another HOT one over here!!!!

This is fast-paced… with just the right amount of suspense and action…. lots of humour…  romantic  and extremely hot!

This book will take you to Hunter’s beginning… on how he became a member of the Devil’s Jack and how he ended up kidnapping Picnic’s daughter Em.  (And we all know who Picnic is!).

And then there’s Em, a view of her childhood, growing up as Picnic’s daughter…  her story before and when Hunter, a.k.a. Liam, entered  in the picture.

We highly recommended that you read Reaper’s Legacy before this book, though it’s not necessary.  But if you have read it, then you already had a glimpse of how Em met Liam and her kidnapping…  but this time, read the full version through Em and Hunter’s POV.

And, of course, the aftermath…  knowing they both are from a rival biker club…. and that Picnic will not hesitate to kill Liam…  will that stop Liam from pursuing Em and vice versa? Well…. not if Liam or Em can help it!. 😉

Em’s character is smart, brave, kick-ass, stubborn and just the coolest likeable female lead there is…. and one of the most that we love about Em, is that  she knows and goes after what she wants!

And Liam, well, he defies the odds against them, thus, proving himself worthy. We love his sexy and cool demeanour and how he fought and respects his woman. He is one hot alpha!

Their story is definitely not easy…. but who wants easy?

All in all, we totally loved it!!!!  It is well written… and it has everything a biker romance book should have : there is  action, that nail-biting suspense, humour, just enough angst and of course, it’s totally hot!.  😉

AND….  guess who the next story is gonna be? Picnic!!! OMG!!! That little preview of Picnic’s story in the end, what a tease!!!! WE CANT WAIT!

❤️ ❤️ ❤️

ARC provided by publisher in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you.

About the Author: Hayley Oakes is a wife to a Manchester United fan and a mother to a three year old daughter both require patience and a sense of humour. My Inspiration Behind the Characters

I have always loved angst ridden romance ever since the days of ‘My so called life’ and ‘Party of five’. I love the idea of a romance that is doomed to fail despite how much the characters are drawn to each other.
I wanted to create a story where the characters were unable to stay apart but didn’t really like each other. I also don’t like stories where the end is a foregone conclusion and so I like the reader to always guess what will happen next.

My inspiration for Kyle was every bad boy in fiction that I ever read, in my mind he was a lot harsher than I wrote him but it didn’t translate to paper and he became a tortured good guy deep down. I wanted him to be a mixture of Jordan Catalano from ‘My so called life’, Griffin from ‘Party of Five’ and Patrick from ’10 things I hate about you’. Someone who is adored by people but doesn’t require the adoration, who is effortlessly cool but doesn’t need the acceptance.
My inspiration for Sophie was the teenage angst movies that I have enjoyed my whole life. The torture of feeling like you don’t quite fit in and the hardship of realising that your parents aren’t perfect. You realise that your mum can love again and be giddy. You realise that you can get yourself into trouble and don’t have to ask permission for everything. My own teenage experiences and those of my friends were drawn on heavily,
Sophie gets a bad rep in some reviews for being whiny and selfish but really all she is someone who is too scared to just be herself and accept what she wants. She’s a typical teenager who worries more about what everyone else thinks rather than just following her heart.

The British Psyche that causes love to be even more torturous …..

Brits are polite and say sorry a lot,
They keep their feelings bottled up and tied in a knot,
They find it hard to say exactly how they feel,
Keeping emotions hidden well, even as they heal.

Brits often tend to worry what other people think,
Not usually finding it easy to throw caution to the wind.
They need a cup of tea to calm any storm.
They need validation and like to conform.

When it comes to love, Brits find it hard to express,
Exactly how they feel which can leave them in a mess.
It’s hard to win at love if you aren’t prepared to say.
Just how much you feel and I love you every day.

Despite their guarded nature they love strong and deep.
You get loyalty and trust, qualities to keep.
The words are not forthcoming but actions certainly are,
Which speak louder than words and are preferred by far.

BECAUSE OF KIAN by Sibylla Matilde Blog Tour And Giveaway

Because of Kian

About Because of Kian

***** Mature Content, Abuse, Sexual Situations, Adult Situations, Strong Language *****

I know I’m twisted. Growing up in a perfectly well-adjusted home, I don’t really have an excuse. But no matter… I realize how messed up I am. And therapy can only do so much.

I pushed my boyfriend to violence, a violence he couldn’t control. Sickly, I almost liked it. So I pushed him more. Before long, the pain outweighed the pleasure and the loss I sustained shattered me. So I ran. I’m now a bit shell-shocked harboring a lot of guilt. My boyfriend is now my ex and wants revenge. He wants me to pay for turning him into the monster he’s become. And I still have a deviant yearning that I don’t understand. My own monster inside… my own demon to battle.

I can’t get close to anyone. I can’t give in and scratch that itch. I can’t wreck someone else.

And now there is Kian… my rescuer on a dark, painful night. He sees through my pretense. He tries to pull me from my frightened isolation, to keep me from becoming a victim. He forces me to face my warped desires and shows me that pain doesn’t really have to truly hurt.

He wants to show me a way to serenity. But I am afraid… Will I ruin a good man?

His hands slid along my jaw, just above my neck, and nudged my face up to his. My eyes closed to shield him from the raw emotion he would see in them. I waited for his words. A rebuff or a command. Something to start the argument that was sure to follow.

But instead of hearing the growl of his voice, I felt his lips crash down on mine. And I blossomed beneath him.

My arms frantically wrapped tightly around his waist. His kiss was demanding, fervent and rough. My aching soul relished in the painful, bruising force of his mouth on mine, the tight pull of his fingers in my hair. Taking a few steps, he pushed me roughly up against the wall, and I moaned as the rush of desire poured through me.

He knew. I needed him. I needed this.

Sibylla Matilde

Sibylla Matilde

Sibylla Matilde grew up in the mountain valleys of Southwest Montana exploring the dusty Old West gold country on the back of a horse. She attended a two-room schoolhouse beginning in 1st grade & had the same teacher until she changed schools after 7th. Beginning at about age 12, Sibylla discovered historical romance, feeding off of work of Jude Deveraux & Lisa Kleypas. She loves a book that can make the reader run the gamut of emotions, from the sweet glow of new love to gut-wrenching heartache. She is a true romantic & always has stories floating around in her head, living in a fantasyland until she writes them down to free them.

Music is her emotional trigger. Growing up with a Wagnarian-loving mother, Sibylla was raised to treasure music that digs deep into the psyche, drawing out elation, sorrow, grief, desire. The soundtrack to her life includes many genres spanning centuries. She looooooooves Thirty Seconds to Mars (rather obsessively, actually… but, really, how can you NOT be crazy about this guy!? Jared Leto. Shhh. ) & pimps them out to all her friends through Spotify. She also delights in Met Opera HD broadcasts at her local movie theater & hopes (listening Met?) to someday see Diana Damrau reprise her role as Mozart’s Queen of the Night in Die Zauberflöte.

Sibylla lives with her husband and hero who saved her from her own calamitous, young-adult self. He makes her laugh daily, even when things are tough. He’s proved to her that love really can heal a shattered soul. In 18 years, they have never had a fight, although argue regularly with their two teenage kids who have, unfortunately, inherited their father’s quick wit (unfortunate as it is a quick wit that Sibylla, herself, definitely does not possess – there is a reason she is a writer & not a stand-up comedian). They live a quiet life with their two weird little rescued Chiweenies. Wait… teenagers & little yap-dogs? OK, maybe not so quiet.

Confusing to start but unputdownable towards the end

This started out really confusing. There wasn’t enough world building or any basic info. I double checked the GR blurb, the front of the book, the back of the book.. etc. It felt like I was missing a prequel or a book one. Then it wasn’t till much later that I found this “The Seer is a stand-alone novel but it takes place in a universe (The Tellaran Realm) where one already published book (Stardancer) takes place”. That explains it. I urge you to read that other one if you felt as lost as I am.

It might be because of the lack of info that I didn’t feel any connection to the characters nor do I believe in their romance. BUT, the story really did pick up about half way. THEN, it’s really unputdownable, lots of action and intrigue. A lot of it had to do with crazy Jasa. She was completely delusional, but she wasn’t alone. She did so much for Jolar, or rather using him to her own advantage.

I didn’t like Jolar at the beginning, how much he kept from Arissa. But, he resurrected himself at the end, in a really big way. It went against what he was taught his whole life. It just showed how much integrity he had, and how much he was in love with Arissa.

The other character that I really liked was Kemma. She’s not your normal ornament (yes, what a strange word for an occupation, but i digress). She’s clever and fierceless. Arissa’s journey would be much worse if it wasn’t for her. I was glad that they found each other, even if the chances for that was next to nil.

I wouldn’t mind reading more of Jolar and Arissa story, if there were more.

About When All the World Sleeps:

Daniel Whitlock is terrified of going to sleep. And rightly so: he sleepwalks, with no awareness or memory of his actions. Including burning down Kenny Cooper’s house—with Kenny inside it—after Kenny brutally beat him for being gay. Back in the tiny town of Logan after serving his prison sentence, Daniel isolates himself in a cabin in the woods and chains himself to his bed at night.

Like the rest of Logan, local cop Joe Belman doesn’t believe Daniel’s absurd defense. But when Bel saves Daniel from a retaliatory fire, he discovers that Daniel might not be what everyone thinks: killer, liar, tweaker, freak. Bel agrees to control Daniel at night—for the sake of the other townsfolk. Daniel’s fascinating, but Bel’s not going there.

Yet as he’s drawn further into Daniel’s dark world, Bel finds that he likes being in charge. And submitting to Bel gives Daniel the only peace he’s ever known. But Daniel’s demons won’t leave him alone, and he’ll need Bel’s help to slay them once and for all—assuming Bel is willing to risk everything to stand by him.
