rock by Anyta Sunday

About the book:

When Cooper’s parents divorce, he finds himself landed in Week About—one week with his mum and one week with his dad.
Only, it’s not just his dad he has to live with. There’s Lila, too: The other woman, the one who stole the rock-solid foundation of his life.

And then …

There’s Jace. Lila’s son. Lila’s smug, regurgitated-fish-scale-blue eyed son.

All Cooper wants is to have his family back the way it once was, but there’s something about this boy that promises things will never be the same again.

Resisting the realities of his new life, Cooper and Jace get off to a rocky start. But rocky start or not, after hundreds of shared memories together, they forge something new. A close … friendship.

Because friendship is all they can have. Although it’s not like they are realbrothers…

But how does that friendship evolve under the pressures of life?
Under pressures of the heart?

5 Emotionally Gutted and I never want to stop feeling this way stars

This book is going onto my all time favourites, re-read, make me ugly cry shelf.

I have been waiting ALL of 2014 to have a book make me feel this way. I love Angst. And I love books that make me feel like crawling up into them and curling into a ball, hiccuping cause I can’t keep the level of emotion out of my tears. The outer body experience. I haven’t felt this way since I read Split by Mel Bossa.

Anyta Sunday wrote this story so beautifully. I felt EVERYTHING. Everything guys. It reached into the very marrow of my bones.

4Why am I so emotional? 4

” He balls up his fist and presses it into my open palm. ‘I’ll be your rock. Do you think you can handle that today?’

I squeeze his warm fist. His pulse– or is it mine?– beats under my finger.”

4No, it’s not a good look, gain some self-control4

“I smile and trace my name over its surface. Then his.

The tide sweeps in around us as if to soak up my story and run away. I envision it out there being tossed up onto the rocky surface. Has our story ended? If so, will it sink to the bottom of ocean, near the aquamarines that mermaids treasure? Or will the heavy breezes whip it through the sky, carrying it over every surface because it’s not finished yet?

4And deep down I know this never works4

“I glance at the hook he’s tying around his neck. It had to be a hook because I want to reel him in. Even if I can’t or won’t, it’ll be nice to see hope hanging from his chest.”

4But you can lay with me so it doesn’t hurt4

“Our story never sank,” I murmur. “The breeze carried it for us.”

There are so many more beautiful quotes, words, I can add here but I won’t. I’m gonna take these feelings that I have and wrap them all around me, cocoon myself within them, I never want this feeling to leave.

The lack of sleep, the dizziness, the headache. It is all so fucking worth it. Because this book… this book is probably one of the best I’ve ever read.

The best,

It was unputdownable! I left my BR buddy in the dust. She didn’t even get to start it and I was finished.

My eyes couldn’t stop leaking and wouldn’t leave the page. I couldn’t swish the page over fast enough. I had bated breath, racing heart beats, shaking hands. It hurt so fucking good. So good. From beginning to end, it started as a fisher and worked itself up to breaking my heart into a million little pieces only to glue itself back together again… but the fishers are still there as they will never ever be fully healed.

It was motherfuckin epic. The highs and the lows. This is how an addict must feel. The rush. The high. The tumble, The black hole of despair.

This book was EVERYTHING.

Flight of Magpies (A Charm of Magpies #3) by K.J. Charles

Danger in the air. Lovers on the brink.

A Charm of Magpies, Book 3

With the justiciary understaffed, a series of horrifying occult murders to be investigated, and a young student who is flying—literally—off the rails, magical law enforcer Stephen Day is under increasing stress. And his relationship with his aristocratic lover, Lord Crane, is beginning to feel the strain.

Crane chafes at the restrictions of England’s laws, and there’s a worrying development in the blood-and-sex bond he shares with Stephen. A development that makes a sensible man question if they should be together at all.

When a thief strikes at the heart of Crane’s home, a devastating loss brings his closest relationships into bitter conflict—especially his relationship with Stephen. And as old enemies, new enemies, and unexpected enemies paint the lovers into a corner, the pressure threatens to tear them apart.

Warning: Contains hot-blooded sex, cold-blooded murder, sinister magical goings-on and a lot of swearing.

4,5 It’s the end of it all stars

Damn! I can’t believe this series is over. Really. Over.

Dear KJ Charles,

Do you think you can provide us with a 3.5? Just a small itty bitty tinny tiny few lines of some more Lord Crane and some more Stephen??? Just a little story of where they are? And some hot sex on a platter to boot?? Its not to much to ask for I don’t really think….  all us little people who will now have a tiny little fracture, some may be bigger than others, in their hearts because…. because it matters to us… we would probably fall graciously at your feet. Really.

Would forever be grateful, Mare

I loved this series. So very much. Just like my review of book 2 I will repeat: I have never loved two MCs so equally as I do Lord Lucien Crane and Stephen Day. I can’t split them up, I can’t separate why I liked one more than the other because you just can’t.

And then there is Merrick. My Lord. Everyone deserves a Merrick in their life. I’m so glad I have my Merrick. You know those friends that never leave your side, that have your back no matter what. That can go blow for blow with you and it won’t change a thing! Yes everyone deserves a friend like that!

We meet Jonah. I for one can’t wait to sink my teeth into Jackdaw which is currently waiting to be devoured on my Ereader. I’ll let you in on  something. They probably won’t ever replace S&C in my heart. BUT. You never know, stranger things have happened and my mama always told me to never say never.

There is murder and mayhem and laughter and no tears. There is trickery and fights and arguments and the strings of my heart humming. Crane’s declaration. Man. Sex against the wall. Hot. The argument. Worthy.

The way KJ Charles writes, makes reading so effortless. You just fall into it. And… you don’t stop until the end. And it almost feels like all it took from start to finish was just a blink. Its fantasy and magic and fiction and Joy.

“Crane put his hand on Stephen’s tattooed shoulder, pulled him over for a kiss, and felt Stephen’s hands move on him, assertive, cofident, loved.

Two for Joy, That would do very well indeed.”

Pre-Release: Off Campus (Bend or Break #1) by Amy Jo Cousins

Everyone’s got secrets. Some are just harder to hide.

With his father’s ponzi scheme assets frozen, Tom Worthington believes finishing college is impossible unless he can pay his own way. After months sleeping in his car and gypsy-cabbing for cash, he’s ready to do just that.

But his new, older-student housing comes with an unapologetically gay roommate. Tom doesn’t ask why Reese Anders has been separated from the rest of the student population. He’s just happy to be sleeping in a bed.

Reese isn’t about to share his brutal story with his gruff new roommate. You’ve seen one homophobic jock, you’ve seen ’em all. He plans to drag every twink on campus into his bed until Tom moves out. But soon it becomes clear Tom isn’t budging.

Tom isn’t going to let some late-night sex noise scare him off, especially when it’s turning him on. But he doesn’t want any drama either. He’ll keep his hands, if not his eyes, to himself. Boundaries have a way of blurring when you start sharing truths, though. And if Tom and Reese cross too many lines, they may need to find out just how far they can bend…before they break.

Warning: This book contains cranky roommates who vacillate between lashing out and licking, some male/male voyeurism, emotional baggage that neither guy wants to unpack, and the definitive proof that sound carries in college housing.

Mare's Review

1st off Thank You Samhain Publishing via Netgalley for a copy of the e-book.

Secondly that cover… O.M.G… that cover is HELLA… HELLA HOTT. I wanna hug it and squeeze it and sleep with it. That’s how much I love the cover. Because the model… I don’t know who is he but he reminds me of someone who I fell in love with this summer, Zach from BB16. (Big Brother 16).

So this story was my Zach story where he wasn’t just bi-curious but totally ended up with his guy. Gah. This cover. Gets 5+ Send Mare into a lust induced coma stars.

The overall story I enjoyed. I liked the concept, the story line, Reese, the slow burn angst.

However at some moments I really really really wanted to punch Tom in the face.

I facilitated between punching him out and hugging him and then punching him again.

DUDE. Get over it. Was pretty much my mantra.

Did I love Reese?? YES. SO MUCH.

My Reese….GAH LOVE

(anyone else see the resemblance or just me????)

It got to the point where I kinda wished that the story was in Reese’s POV. I really wish I knew his story more in depth.

This was my 1st Amy Jo Cousins book, but Goodreads advised me that she has many a books that I will totally get to.

I liked her wording, the way she spun the story, and of course Reese.

It is the 1st story that I haven’t DNF’d in weeks so, I thank you Ms Cousin from the bottom of my heart for resurrecting me back.

Playing the Fool series by Lisa Henry and J.A Rock

Book 1:

Expected publication: December 29th 2014 by Riptide Publishing

Book 2:

Expected publication: February 2nd 2015 by Riptide Publishing

Book 3:

Expected publication: March 9th 2015 by Riptide Publishing

About the series:

Mac and Henry aren’t just an odd couple—they’re completely improbable: a tough-as-nails, by-the-book FBI agent who picked the wrong week to give up caffeine and donuts, and a young con man who’s as handsome as he is difficult to pin down. But when they’re stuck on the run together, the snark and heat reach Shakespearean proportions. Or maybe that’s just Henry’s flair for the dramatic.

Rural Indiana has never seen an accidental crime-fighting duo quite like this. But when the danger’s over and the play’s done, Mac and Henry may have to write their own script to find a happy ending.

Thank you Netgalley via Riptide Publishing for the e-copy of these books!

I have mad author love for both Lisa Henry and J.A Rock. My 1 wish is that someday I get to be in a room when they are plotting their next joint story. Whether they are going for dark, sad and twisted or fun with fisting 🙂 you’re sure to get a dose of greatness. I was honoured to be able to Beta read Another Man’s Treasure for these 2 ladies. A dark and twisted book that left me feeling a little desolate. I was able to pre- review When All The World Sleeps and was so amazed how these 2 thought up some of the shit they did. And my heart hurt. And the ANGST. OMG these 2 do ANGST so well.

And here’s a well known secret. They write fun stuff too! Like make you LOL and LOL!

Mark Cooper VS America

So much fun and hot that book!

So now I get to tell you about Playing the Fool.

Well no I won’t spoil it for anyone because it’s a long time b4 it releases to the public but I will tell you to Treat yourself with book 1 for Christmas. Good tidings and good cheer! A little Mac and a little Henry really will leave you feeling good.

I can’t even imagine how much these 2 ladies must of laughed their asses off writing some of the sentences in these books.

I am totally not Disguspressed ! Like not at all. I am totally and 100% in love with the way these stories flowed.

Henry and Mac take you on such a fun fun ride. Costumes and dresses! Guns and murder!

Candy and donuts and just say no to sugar.

Say no to decaf and nasty ass tea!

Happy birthdays, twisted persona’s, running, someone’s always running.

So here’s my advice. Start this book with a great big mug of coffee (pot! pot of coffee) and a box of doughnuts. Don’t share the doughnuts with anyone. This box should be your’s and your’s alone. Ensure that you have lots of candy or chocolate with you at all times.

If you’re on a diet this book is not for you 😉

I’m totally saddened that this ride has ended for me…. for now

I am so disguspressed with those last 2 words cause I want more more more and soon soon soon and please please please!

But alas while I wait to see if get more Mac and Henry….  I’ll take some Brandon and Alex to keep me company!!!

Second Helpings by Charlie Cochrane Blog Tour and Giveaway!

I’m thrilled skinny to be dropping in here as part of the Second Helpings blog tour. A million thanks to Slitsreads for having me as a guest.

Old kitchen table rural cottage morning

About Second Helpings

Stuart Collins’s life might as well have ended a year ago when his partner died in a car crash. Even Stuart’s widowed father has found new love with an old friend, Isabel Franklin, so why can’t Stuart be bothered to try?

Then he gets a phone call from Isabel’s son, Paul, who wants to check out whether or not Mr. Collins is good enough for his mother. During dinner together, though, they end up checking out each other. Trouble is, Paul’s got a boyfriend—or maybe he doesn’t, since the boyfriend’s supposedly giving Paul the push by ignoring him. Or maybe Paul just wants to have his cake and eat it too.

Honesty with each other is the only way to move forward. But maybe honesty with themselves is what they really need.

Mare's Review

Thank you Riptide Publishing and Charlie Cochrane for a copy of the book.

3.5 Stars

This is going to be a shorty review. My 1st Charlie Cochrane book! Will no be my last.

I liked the story and I liked it’s delivery. Charlie’s words flowed rather poetically after the 1st 2 chapters.

I was hooked, and I couldn’t picture spending a Sunday afternoon and the cottage any other way.

Lying in the hammock, with a drink and the breeze and my ereader! Perfection!

I can state that I wished the book was a longer, and a little bit more in depth but I’m sure my next Charlie book will give me that!

3.5 Stars

Meatworks by Jordan Castillo Price

Desmond Poole is damaged in more ways than one. If he was an underachiever before, he’s entirely useless now that he’s lost his right hand. He spends his time drowning his sorrows in vodka while he deliberately blows off the training that would help him master his new prosthetic. Social Services seems determined to try and stop him from wallowing in his own filth, so he’s forced to attend an amputee support group. He expects nothing more than stale cookies, tepid decaf and a bunch of self-pitying sob stories, so he’s blindsided when a fellow amputee catches his eye. Corey Steiner is a hot young rudeboy who works his robotic limb like an extension of his own body, and he’s smitten by Desmond’s crusty punk rock charm from the get-go. Unfortunately, Desmond hasn’t quite severed ties with his ex-boyfriend, and Corey isn’t known for his maturity or patience. Meatworks is set in a bleak near-future where cell phone and personal computer technologies never developed. In their place, robotics flourished. Now robots run everything from cars to coffee pots. Taking the guesswork out of menial tasks was intended to create leisure time, but instead robots have made society dependent and passive. Desmond loathes robots and goes out of his way to avoid them. But can he survive without the robotic arm strapped to the end of his stump?

Mare's Review

It takes a certain ingenuous faith – but I have it – to believe that people who read and reflect more likely than not come to judge things with liberality and truth.”  ― A.C Grayling

I’m pretty much not going to write a coherent review, this has been decided since my fingers landed on the keyboard. My 1st 8 years of life was in the ghetto (well what’s classified as a ghetto here). The place where I grew up was Scarborough. 2 bedroom apartment, shared a room with my sis. When the grandparents came down from the former Yugoslavia there was 6 people to 2 bedrooms.

We got out of the ghetto, with a lot of hard work by my dad, moved to a house in the burbs. Bought all the latest clothes, brand name, no way were we going to Bi-way. Makes me laugh cause as an adult, the dollar store has some amazing deals.Once a month  I go and end up spending a crazy amount of cash and come out with bag fulls of shit that would cost me over 200 in Walmart or Target. But as a child/tween/teenager you take for granted all the shit.

The friends, the social elements, the wanting to fit in, it’s so high school. People grow out of it right? Well some don’t. Still haven’t and probably never will.

JCP wrote a compelling story, to me. a story about hope, and healing and maybe finding oneself. She made me “reflect” on people in the past, the one’s who grew up vs the ones that didn’t.

Desmond and I don’t have shit in common but he reminds me of someone I know so much that it kind of feels uncanny. Scary. Sad.

Desmond’s a people pleaser, wants to be accepted.

So were you, you stole cars for joy rides and drag raced to be cool.

Desmond hung out with some pretty shitty people.

So did you.

Desmond didn’t want to grow up.

Neither did you.

Desmond had Jim.

You had her.

Desmond plays Russian Roulette by sticking his hand into a bot.

You literally played Russian Roulette and lost a friend.

Desmond drinks in depression.

You snort and drink to forget.

You can’t help someone if they don’t want to help themselves. But it’s hard to watch someone you love spiral down a path of self destruction and know that trying to help would only be in vain. That you are actually more a hindrance than help because you knew the person that came “before”. And… the memories of “before” are just that.. memories… The feeling of having 2 working hands, the job you took for granted, the body that warmed you for a little bit… the little person that wanted to look up to you, that little person that didn’t comprehend the in’s and out’s and the why’s and how come he doesn’t want to see me.

The struggles and the fights, moving on. It’s all a part of growing up. Who doesn’t fold the “before” around them like a blanket because the “after” is harder to deal with. When swigging back Vodka or snorting lines makes you forget and feel free cause you’re flying so high that you feel amazing. That coming down tho, I don’t know, must be a bitch no?

No matter where you come from, rich/poor, ghetto/burbs we all have problems.

It’s how you deal with them that counts.

And this is where they differ….

Some take the easy way out. They keep travelling on the road of nowhereville, and one day you receive a link and you see that person in the news for doing a crime, said to be largest heist this city has seen. You almost want to stop reading but you can’t cause your like a deer in the headlights, stuck. And all you feel is just an immense sense of sadness because hands down you know, in your heart of hearts, that THAT is at least a decade right?  And in a decades time that little person will be in their lates 20’s… maybe married? Maybe a dad? And you missed it all…

For what???? For alot of fucking nothing.

Desmond, in the end I think he had hope. He dealt with his loss. He realized that he had to deal with the cards that were stacked in his deck, that it was the only way cause he could keep going the way he was but he wasn’t going to get too far. Corey was….. like a breath of fresh air. A new start. A fresh beginning. Still an ass, still lazy but dear Lord I hearted you hard Desmond.

This book isn’t your conventional M/M romance. No. It was REFRESHING. It was real life.  It was a stellar hands down 5 star read. It was realness, it was raw. It was just freaking right.  No hearts and rainbows here.

“Those personal aspects that made it hard to write must be the very aspects that made the story impossible to abandon.” JCP

I couldn’t agree more.
