The Upside to Being Single by Emma Hart

If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads.

I still don’t know why I did it.
Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends.
Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they’d throw Fireball shots with the beads.
Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face.
Maybe it was because I never thought I’d see them again.
Not that it matters. Not today.
Because the hotel I manage was finally bought—and the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent.

There are many upsides to being single.
Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like?
Not one of them.

(THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE is a standalone, romantic comedy from the author who brought you MISS FIX-IT and BEING BROOKE.)

This book is probably not the best book to be my 1st review of 2018.

But alas, we can’t win them all they say.

Now don’t get me wrong, The Upside to Being Single definitely had great perks about it otherwise I never would have finished it.  It was funny, there was no angst, there was no woman hating shaming, there was 2 people getting to know each other and like each other. The other plus was that it took up to 95% before the 2 MCs had sex. I know lots of people need sex in their romance novels. I really really don’t! Personally I prefer sexual tension and the feelings that are associated with the struggle and the lust. The I want you so fucking bad I’m gonna go out of my mind. Those are the best kind of stories for me.

So now why was it just ok? I prefer more of a show don’t tell. I need to feel the feelings that are coming off the pages and honestly I just didn’t with this book.

Also this book needed to be edited. I don’t have a problem with spelling mistakes because I am able to get the gist of the story but this one missed words and some sentence structure was messed up. I still was able to finish it so it wasn’t that bad…

In essence I liked the blurb way more than I loved the story.

And I will read book 2 cause even though its a stand alone the 2 best friends look to be getting a story.

All For the Game Series by Nora Sakavic

Book 1:

Neil Josten is the newest addition to the Palmetto State University Exy team. He’s short, he’s fast, he’s got a ton of potential—and he’s the runaway son of the murderous crime lord known as The Butcher.

Signing a contract with the PSU Foxes is the last thing a guy like Neil should do. The team is high profile and he doesn’t need sports crews broadcasting pictures of his face around the nation. His lies will hold up only so long under this kind of scrutiny and the truth will get him killed.

But Neil’s not the only one with secrets on the team. One of Neil’s new teammates is a friend from his old life, and Neil can’t walk away from him a second time. Neil has survived the last eight years by running. Maybe he’s finally found someone and something worth fighting for.

Book 2:

Book 2 of All for the Game; The Raven King follows The Foxhole Court

The Foxes are a fractured mess, but their latest disaster might be the miracle they’ve always needed to come together as a team. The one person standing in their way is Andrew, and the only one who can break through his personal barriers is Neil.

Except Andrew doesn’t give up anything for free and Neil is terrible at trusting anyone but himself. The two don’t have much time to come to terms with their situation before outside forces start tearing them apart. Riko is intent on destroying Neil’s fragile new life, and the Foxes have just become collateral damage.

Neil’s days are numbered, but he’s learning the hard way to go down fighting for what he believes in, and Neil believes in Andrew even if Andrew won’t believe in himself.

Book 3:

Neil Josten is out of time. He knew when he came to PSU he wouldn’t survive the year, but with his death right around the corner he’s got more reasons than ever to live.

Befriending the Foxes was inadvisable. Kissing one is unthinkable. Neil should know better than to get involved with anyone this close to the end, but Andrew’s never been the easiest person to walk away from. If they both say it doesn’t mean anything, maybe Neil won’t regret losing it, but the one person Neil can’t lie to is himself.

He’s got promises to keep and a team to get to championships if he can just outrun Riko a little longer, but Riko’s not the only monster in Neil’s life. The truth might get them all killed—or be Neil’s one shot at getting out of this alive.

Mare's Review

How do you write a review for something so epic that words can’t describe the ride?
How do you write a review to reflect every single thing you felt while reading 1 of the most amazing series ever put out?
How do you write a review so that you can convey to the author and the world that you are absolutely speechless and blindsided for the love that you have for this series.

You just cant. I wouldn’t do this series justice. But I sure as fuck am gonna try.

Its YA/NA which sometimes can be a hard limit for me. But from the 1st sentence of book 1 I was hooked, line, and sinker.

That feeling that as soon as book 3 is done you’re jumping back into book 1. Yah. That feeling.

I love books for the words. It doesn’t matter what the story is about, rarely for me, what matters is the words. And Nora Sakavic had them in spades. She slayed me in short sentences and she slayed me in the long ones.
She pretty much just slayed me open. If she could have asked me “yes or no” my answer would have always been “Yes”.

I love books for words, but I also loved this series for the story. It had all my crutches in 1. All the crutches! And Jesus did that ever make me happy!!!!
Boys on Boys
And a good good seriously amazing mind fuck.

There are so many main MCs in this book, its hard to just love 1 or 2 or hate them all.
You felt their pain and you felt their joy. The ride, Jesus the ride!!! I loved it!!!!!!!

But my heart was claimed and owned by Andrew.

JFC. Andrew.

I don’t want to dissect everything today
I don’t mean to pick you apart you see
But I can’t help it
There I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off
Slap me with a splintered ruler
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn’t there already
If only I could hunt the hunter

” Is your spine the spine of the righteous?” Andrew wondered. “Are you trying your best to step on my toes because you are feeling the tragic weight of the holier than thou?”

And all I really want is some patience
A way to calm the angry voice
And all I really want is deliverance
Do I wear you out
You must wonder why I’m so relentless and all strung out
I’m consumed by the chill of solitary
I’m like Estella
I like to reel it in and then spit it out
I’m frustrated by your apathy
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land
If only I could meet the Maker

“I hate you.” Andrew said casually. He took a last long drag from his cigarette and flicked it off the roof. “You were supposed to be a side effect of the drugs.”

What I wouldn’t give to find a soulmate
Someone else to catch this drift
And what I wouldn’t give to meet a kindred
Enough about me, let’s talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, let’s talk about life for a while
The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretenses
Falling all around…all around
Why are you so petrified of silence
Here can you handle this?

Stay,” Andrew said, and leaned down to kiss him. Time was nothing. Seconds were days, were years, were the breaths that caught between their mouths and the bite of Neil’s fingernails against his palms, the scrape of teeth against his lower lip and the warm slide of a tongue against his.”

This ride will stay with me for a long time. I love feeling that epicness.
I hate losing it

I cant wait for Nora Sakavic to write more WORDS! I cannot freaking WAIT.

I’m so glad these were made into Paperbacks. I hug them… regularly.

I have also re-read this series a billion times and I wont stop rereading them because they are everything.

Love Lessons 1 & 2 series by Heidi Cullinan

Book 1

Love doesn’t come with a syllabus.

Kelly Davidson has waited what seems like forever to graduate high school and get out of his small-minded, small town. But when he arrives at Hope University, he quickly realizes finding his Prince Charming isn’t so easy. Everyone here is already out. In fact, Kelly could be the only virgin on campus.

Worst of all, he’s landed the charming, handsome, gay campus Casanova as a roommate, whose bed might as well be equipped with a revolving door.

Walter Lucas doesn’t believe in storybook love. Everyone is better off having as much fun as possible with as many people as possible…except his shy, sad little sack of a roommate is seriously screwing up his world view.

As Walter sets out to lure Kelly out of his shell, staying just friends is harder than he anticipated. He discovers love is a crash course in determination. To make the grade, he’ll have to finally show up for class…and overcome his own private fear that love was never meant to last.

Warning: This story contains lingering glances, milder than usual sexual content for this author, and a steamy dance-floor kiss. Story has no dairy or egg content, but may contain almonds.

Book 2

Sometimes you have to play love by ear.

Aaron Seavers is a pathetic mess, and he knows it. He lives in terror of incurring his father’s wrath and disappointing his mother, and he can’t stop dithering about where to go to college—with fall term only weeks away. Ditched by a friend at a miserable summer farewell party, all he can do is get drunk in the laundry room and regret he was ever born. Until a geeky-cute classmate lifts his spirits, leaving him confident of two things: his sexual orientation, and where he’s headed to school.
Giles Mulder can’t wait to get the hell out of Oak Grove, Minnesota, and off to college, where he plans to play his violin and figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. But when Aaron appears on campus, memories of hometown hazing threaten what he’d hoped would be his haven. As the semester wears on, their attraction crescendos from double-cautious to a rich, swelling chord. But if more than one set of controlling parents have their way, the music of their love could come to a shattering end.

Warning: Contains showmances, bad parenting, Walter Lucas, and a cappella.

Mare's Review

My 2nd and 3rd read of 2015.

While it didn’t start off the bang that I wanted, these books so so made up for that fact.

God, I hate it when no books work for me, when I start DNFing at the 10 page mark, when I roll my eyes, skim, scroll my e reader for another book because seriously there’s got to be something better out there right? right! And inadvertently I found the Love Lessons series through 1 of my internet boo’s Kristie.

She says “Oh Mare these books are good”

I trust her, so I try….

And I get sucked into this world full of Disney cheer, and laughter, and such oowey gooey sweetness that it is coming out of my pores! And its not cheesy sweetness, cause you know, I cant stand cheesy sweetness. There is sexual tension woven into 50% of the book that I thought I might get asphyxiated by it.

And the moments were tender and sweet and just so so right.

Book 1 was a little treasure in the sea of bullcrap.

And I finish it and am lost in this sweet essence that just engulfed me!

Now on to book 2, expecting the same oowey gooey sweet stuff………..

Boy I was never ever so wrong.

What I got was 270 pages of….

Hot sex. OMG. From the get go… the sex was just…. out of the stratosphere HOTT.

Bible thumpers

Douchebag dads

crazy ass mom’s

Supportive loving parents and friends

WTF. Did that just happen? Seriously?

And I got

Ready for it?

I got ELIJAH!!!!!!! Elijah who is a side character from the main ones, but the 1 I feel for. Hook. Line. Sinker

He stole the show, I love him. I want him. And his book is coming

In August

So far. So far away. So so so far away.

GAH. The wait is going to be torture, and not sweet torture at that.

I do believe that book 3 will be the most epic one of them all. Because

Thanks to Kristie and Susan for understanding my hype through all the tweets.

And for keeping it together because they knew what was coming and didnt spoil that shit once for me!

-F. Scott Fitzgerald

She is living color, and I’ve been in a black-and-white world for far too long without her.
Powerful stuff. It surrounds me. I’ve felt it since I first arrived. The forcefield of her. The magnetism of her. The power she wields over me. I’m alive again because of her, like a dying plant that finally gets some water. I’ve got it bad for this girl.
Reality dawns.
The light comes through the darkness and shines on me.
She’s my water.

The truth is I breathe with him. He is my air. Raison d’etre.

Stalk KO!

Mare's Review

4 She did it to me again starz.

Thank you KO for the advanced readers copy of this book

Katherine Owen does NOT do Light and Fluffy. She does stab your heart and watch you slowly bleed to death. She stabs with these little pricks. She stabs with intent on making you reach down to hold your heart and in your hands and watch it beat out.

Tis true that this can be read as a Standalone. But don’t do it. Don’t do that to yourself. You would be missing the backstory, the angst and having your soul crushed. Get your soul crushed people! It is worth it in the end!!!!

TMIT shattered my soul. Living in a book where 96% of it is angst… Shatters your soul. I went into TMIT with no knowledge of the book or what was in store for me…

My GR updates scared some people away!

08/27/2013 8.0% “Another angsty read.. oh my heart, my precious fragile heart… can it take this????”
08/27/2013 18.0% “breaking….cracking… my heart is fucking HURTING 2 comments
08/27/2013 48.0% “I.CANT.TAKE.THE.HEARTACHE! I need a grief counsellor stat! And a hug! I need…. I need the HEA or I may slit my fucking wrists!”
08/28/2013 65.0% “This book is FUCKING KILLING ME
But yet like an addicted heroin addict I can’t stop…
08/28/2013 67.0% “NO!!!! NO!!!!! NO!!!!!
GOD” 5 comments
08/28/2013 99.0% “IM DONE… HOLY HOLY SHIT!!! <3”

^^^^ see ^^^ Soul.Shattering.

So with that being said I was way more prepared for Tally and Linc this time around.

A different set of problems, coping mechanisms and ANGST ANGST ANGST out your eyes and ears and nose and throat.

Tally and Linc are like no 2 other characters. I can’t compare them. And now a days when reading a Het book makes me roll my eyes continuously, This. Them. Breathe of fresh air. It reminds me that there are some seriously amazing authors out there that love to sucker punch you right in the throat 🙂 It’s real. With most books you get to the HEA/HFN and are content because in your mind it all worked out and they walked hand in hand right into that rainbow with puppies weaving in and out of their feet. They had the 2.5 kids and the white picket fence.

Real life, sends obstacles…lots and lots of them and everyday in a marriage/relationship is a struggle. Everyday you wonder what if I just throw the towel down? What am I doing? You question every little thing. Everything.

I could understand Tally. Amazing how well I understood her.

I won’t get into the specifics of the book but I will tell you after book 2, the uphill battle for these 2 looks as if it has finally come to an end. I LOVED the ending. Loved it. I cried happy happy tears as I lied in bed last night finishing this up.

KO~ You did it again. It was Epic

True unconditional love tears through the fragile fabric of mortality. Life can come and go as quick as the wind, but love survives the test of time. A heart full of love will always be remembered.” Unkown

Consumed (Devoured #2) by Emily Snow

Now that Lucas has declared his love for her, Sienna is sure the drama between them is over.

She’s not afraid of Lucas’s ex-wife or whatever secret the other woman is holding over him. For two blissful days—the remainder of Sienna’s contract with Lucas—they hole up in a vacation house in the mountains of Tennessee, consuming each other. At the end of their stay, Lucas comes to Sienna with a proposition: his band, Your Toxic Sequel, is going on tour with Wicked Lambs, and he wants her with him the entire time. Sienna agrees to work wardrobe and be his official girl.

Life on the road is different from anything Sienna has ever known. Not only does she have to deal with Lucas’s band members, but she’s also forced to be around Cilla, the lead singer of Wicked Lambs, who’s clearly in love with Lucas. Despite horny band mates and a persistent gorgeous rock goddess determined to sink her claws into Lucas, Sienna stays by his side.

Then the threats start.

Lucas’s ex-wife Sam isn’t happy that he’s moved on, and Sam begins harassing Sienna—everything from threatening emails to phone calls and even fake accounts on Your Toxic Sequel message boards slamming her and spreading vicious rumors. Sienna keeps this from Lucas since she knows how bad Sam is for his music.

It’s not until Sienna is attacked by a crazed YTS fan hired by Sam, and Sam starts to aim her verbal threats at Sienna’s grandmother, that Lucas finally reveals his secret. And it’s a big one…

Silvana's Review

I waited for this book to come out for sooo long, was beyond ecstatic the day it came out only….

The book was too short and the conflict resolution was weak! I was looking forward to see what Sam held over Lucas and when it was revealed, I thought this is interesting and could not wait to see what will unravel next. Unfortunately the way it was resolved was too ‘easy’, unbelievable and so not in keeping with the character at all. The story was too rushed and lackluster.

It wasn’t all bad, there were things I enjoyed mainly Sinjin, I am so looking forward to his story, the banter between him and Sienna had me smiling every time they got together. Lucas was amazing, loved how he loved Red (Sienna) whom I thought seemed much stronger and more sure of herself in Consumed. I just would have loved more interaction between Lucas and Red, also them having more time with each other. I needed to feel more connection, whether me with the characters or between the characters themselves, this was sadly lacking.

This book just emphasizes the point that not all stories need to be told in series, some can be told in one long instalment.
